California Math and Science Partnership

The Central Coast Math and Science Project is funded by the California Department of Education as part of the California Math and Science Partnerships. The goal of the project is to increase the academic achievement of all students by enhancing the content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of teachers through professional development.

Central Coast Science Project (CCSP)

The Central Coast Science Project (CCSP), operating out of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, is one of several California Science Projects funded by the University of California Office of the President. The CCSP offers rigorous professional development workshops each summer (and often during the academic year) to practicing K-12 teachers from the Central Coast and beyond.

Modeling Science Project Workshop

The Modeling Science Project is designed to create systemic change in the way that students learn the sciences through intensive, hands-on professional development opportunities for science teachers. Based on recent science reform work, Modeling Science Instruction is rooted in a cohesive “minds-on” approach to learning.  This professional development opportunity will examine highly effective methods for conceptualizing topics in science by having participants engage in and analyze effective, authentic teaching activities. The Modeling Science Instruction project will assist teachers and schools in organizing their courses around a small number of scientific models, thus enhancing course coherency and articulation.  Further, the project is deeply rooted in both the California State standards and in scientifically-based instructional strategies, to address skill gaps in NCLB sub-group achievement.

STEMLITES Project

The Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Literacy Integration in the Elementary School (STEMLITES) project seeks to advance science instruction in the elementary school through university- and school-based collaboration to develop curriculum materials that integrate science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and literacy in the 4th and 5th grade.

Cal Poly faculty, led by Dr. Shirley Magnusson in the College of Education, and Santa Maria Bonita teachers collaborated through the 06-07 school year in the creation, revision, and refinement, and pilot testing of curriculum and instruction for teaching Static Electricity, Magnetism, Current Electricity and Electromagnetism in the 4th grade. The second year of funding supported a phase two expansion of the program into the 5th grade with creation, revision, and pilot testing completed by teachers from Atascadero Unified School District. The third year of funding (2008) has focused on the distribution of materials to several districts in the county. STEMLITES is generously funded by the Stephen Bechtel Fund.
