Successful Year of the Learn By Doing Lab (LBDL)
The LBDL is a place where Cal Poly students become instructors and 4th- 8th graders become scientists. Through the LBDL (SCM 302), over 60 Cal Poly students have had the opportunity to test out the teaching career in a safe, supported atmosphere. These Cal Poly students design lesson plans and activities and then teach hands-on, demonstration-filled lessons to visiting 4th – 8th grade students. Since the launch of the Learn By Doing Lab in Spring 2008, nearly two-thousand and five hundred elementary and middle school students have participated! These students arrive to our university campus, put on lab coats and goggles and learn enormous amounts of science content while having fun. Local teachers and students alike thoroughly enjoy every minute of their experience at Cal Poly’s Learn By Doing Lab. The Cal Poly students who instruct the courses are always thankful for their "Learn By Doing" experience they have as teachers in this SCM 302 course.
