Program Information and Application
Applications for 2009 will be available December 2008
The California State University in partnership with Department of Energy national research laboratories and the NASA Ames Research Center is announcing the 2008 Science Teacher and Researcher (STAR) pre-service science teacher summer research program.
Who: CSU students in their junior or senior years, recent graduates who are enrolled in a CSU teacher credential program, or recent graduates from a CSU teacher credential program are eligible to apply.
What: An eight week research internship for CSU undergraduate and credential students focused on a career in science teaching. STAR interns will be paid a $4,000 stipend for the eight-week program commitment. Housing costs, if needed, may also be supported by the STAR program (or your home CSU campus). Students will have the opportunity to enroll in research and science teaching seminar courses to obtain university credit for their summer experience.
When: Summer 2009, approximately mid June through mid August (exact dates TBD). The full eight week commitment is required.
Where: A total of forty-five positions are available at four different sites in the San Francisco Bay Area:
- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)
- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)
- NASA Ames Research Center
- Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC)
Why: STAR interns will be able to better connect the doing of science to the teaching of science by:
| 1. |
Experiencing cutting edge research at a federal laboratory or research center in a paid summer research internship, with the possibility of returning in subsequent summers |
| 2. |
Learning more about what it means to be a 6-12th grade science teacher |
| 3. |
Getting to know other teacher-scientists and participate in a larger community of science teachers |
| 4. |
Becoming part of the larger scientific community and develop relationships with research scientists at federal laboratories and research centers to help in your career development and teaching activities. |
Selection Criteria: Students will be selected from Northern and Central California CSU campuses using the following criteria:
- Undergraduate major (primarily physics, chemistry, biochemistry, geosciences, and biology, with the possibility for other majors such as engineering).
- Interest in becoming a science teacher (as expressed in an personal statement).
- GPA (minimum of 3.0 required).
- Faculty letter of support.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien status.
STAR Intern Expectations:
| 1. |
Participate in an eight-week summer research internship to conduct scientific research at a federal laboratory or research center. |
| 2. |
Prepare and present a research poster describing summer research at the end of the program. |
| 3. |
Participate in weekly half-day seminars and workshops focused on science teaching; there will be three common 1-day workshops in which students from all four sites will participate at a single lab site. |
| 4. |
Produce a science education module (e.g., lesson evaluation, lesson plan, etc). |
| 5. |
Participate in teacher-scientist community building activities (in person and online). |
| 6. |
Participate in STAR Program evaluation activities, during and after the program. |
